Flowering of lentils
The flowering of lentils, or “fiorita”, in Castelluccio di Norcia
Every year, in a period between the end of May and the second half of July, Umbria region reveals its sensual appeal with the marvelous flowering of lentils in Castelluccio di Norcia. It is not possible to accurately determine the moment of flowering: it depends on the climate, the weather trends of the seasons, the amount of rain received from the soil, the rigidity of the past winter.
In any case, symbolically, the Blooming Festival is celebrated on the last Sunday of June.
Pian Grande, Pian Piccolo and Pian perduto. A few kilometers from the historic center of Norcia, about two hours by car from Borgo Giorgione, in the scenery of the Sibillini Mountains National Park, lentils, gentians, poppies, daffodils, violets, asphodels bloom together and shamrocks in an area of 15 square kilometers.
The work of farmers encloses the fields cultivated with lentils in perfect geometries and highlights them by combining them with the intense green of the fields sown with wheat, or with the light colors of the sainfoin.
You will be simply speechless, both for the majestic colors and for the sublime mountainous context, in which Mount Vettore stands out.
The flat aspect is the result of the telluric movements of the Apennines over millions of years. Today this region presents a microclimate similar to that of the steppe, characterized by large daily temperature ranges and 135 days of frost every year.
It’s difficult to cultivate territory, but across centuries people found in the Lens Culinaris lentil (Igp of Castelluccio di Norcia) an element of virtuous coexistence between man and nature.
The flowering of lentils in that of Castelluccio always attracts many tourists, but to unveil which are the best days to enjoy that event we recommend to call us directly, or to contact the Information Office of Norcia (+039 0743 828173) or the Pro Loco di Norcia (338 6267022).
A tip: try to discover the spontaneous flowering, among the paths that lead to the Mergani (karst structures that cross the plain): more colorful, less geometric while more fragrant.
