The Fountain of Madmen

The Fountain of madmen in Gubbio, visit them and get a particular license!

Its name is “Fontana del Bargello”, taking its name from the nearby building, but everyone know this monument as the Fountain of Madmen. Are you curious?
You can find this fountain in Gubbio, a medieval village which, according to an ancient tradition, has always hosted numerous eccentric and funny people. Read this article and find out how to get the “Mad license", a recognition that you can obtain only in Umbria!

Gubbio is a medieval village that seems to have remained quite intact from the Middle Ages to today, its historic center hides several treasures in its alleys, alternating monuments from the Roman era with the Medieval ones and more modern masterpieces. Just an hour and a half by car from Borgo Giorgione, you can reach Gubbio first by skirting Lake Trasimeno and then discovering the Umbrian countryside.

What to see in one day in Gubbio? The Roman Amphitheater, inside the Theater park, the Cathedral, the Church of San Francesco, the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, the Ducal Palace and, of course, the Fountain of Madmen. You will find it near the Ranghiasci Park, the same often shown in the Italian fiction Don Matteo, walking along the same streets that saw San Francesco tame the wolf.

What to do once you get to the fountain?
Tradition has it that, by running three laps around the fountain, you can get a "Crazy license", but, beware, you must do all this in the presence of a citizen of Gubbio. At the end of the performance he can "baptize" each requesting with the water from the same fountain and then he will requests for you the license to the Maggio Eugubino Association, the only original one (you can buy others in the shops, but only this one is authentic and proves that you are really ... "crazy"!).

This tradition, which dates back to 1880, could derive directly from the folkloric Festa dei Ceri and its "birate", or rather the quick turns around the main flagpole in Piazza Grande that take place during this historical event. However, a group of researchers has highlighted how the area has long been contaminated with iridium, a highly toxic chemical, which could explain the “madness” of the city! In any case, in deep, we are all a little crazy and maybe

  • Una favola

Borgo Giorgione è una location bellissima. Abbiamo soggiornato nell'appartamento Grano.
